It’s September which means it’s time for apples! In this weeks book we’re reading for our Literacy Snack, it has to do with apples to help us kick off apple season. The book I chose this week is Apple Trouble, by Ragnhild Scamell.
“Hedgehog has just finished building a cozy nest ready for winter when a juicy red apple falls from a tree and sticks in her spines on her back. And now Hedgehog can’t fit into her nest.” Her friends try to help her remove it but she keeps getting more items stuck. It’s a super cute book.
It can easily be tied into many different educational areas, apples, friendship, helping, caring, even forest animals. Since hedgehog is the main character in the book, I thought she’d be fun for the kids to make.
Items you’ll need per student
About a tablespoon of whipped cream cheese
1 piece of wheat bread
handful of puff cereal (I used HoneySmacks)
How to assemble
First, have the kids each cut a triangle out of the bread using a plastic knife.
Using the plastic knife, they’ll spread the cream cheese all over the triangle.
Next, add in the puff cereal standing up over most of the triangle, leaving space for her face.
Lastly, add her eyes and nose. Isn’t she cute?!
While the kids are enjoying their snack, I created a free printable to go along with the book. The kids are going to draw in all the items they remember getting stuck in the hedgehog’s spines. I leave the book at the front in case they want to come back and get a few ideas if they’ve forgotten. Click the green box below to get the free printable.
I hope your September is off to a great start and I’ll see you back next week for another snack idea!
Thanks for stopping by!
