These Free Rainbow Alphabet Letter Cards are a great, hands-on way to practice the letters of the alphabet, beginning sounds,  work on fine motor skills and so much more! Rainbows always make me happy and are great to use all year long, or during your weather unit, St. Patrick’s Day, or spring in general.

Hands-on alphabet games are so beneficial for little learners. The cards are great for the students to be able to manipulate and hold in their hands. The small size allows the student to move while learning. The alphabet letter cards are engaging with their bright colors and cute rainbow which makes it even more fun for your little learners!

10 Fun Letter Alphabet Activities

• Play, “Say It, Make It! ” Have your student choose a letter card. Have them say the letter name and then they can make the letter out of Cheerios, mini erasers, whatever you’d like to use.
• The student chooses a letter card and they can practice making the letter using play dough.

• Print out a second set of the letter cards and play memory. Have the student say the letter name or even the sound that it makes if they’re ready for that when they have made a match.
• Have your students put the letter cards in alphabetical order or work in pairs together to arrange them in alphabetical order.

• Turn the letter cards into a scavenger hunt or write the room activity. Have the students walk around the room and find each one of the letters, practicing writing each one down on a piece of paper each time they find one.
• Give the student a container of magnet, foam, or mini eraser letters. Have them choose a letter card and find the matching magnet or eraser. Say the letter after they’ve matched each one.

• Working in small groups or as a class, set out the letters on the floor and choose a student and have them hop to that letter.
• When your student know all of the letters, have them choose a letter card and say the beginning sound it makes. To take it a step further have them also say a word that starts with that letter.

• Grab a set of stamps. Have your student choose a letter card and have them stamp that matching letter on a sheet of paper.
• Add the letter cards to a sensory bin. Students can pick a letter card out of the sensory bin and then trace that letter with a straw in a salt tray or have them write it on a piece of paper.

This is another great video that clearly shows your little learners how to make each letter. She has some great tips in the video too. In the end, she helps explain finger spelling and encourages them to fingerspell their names.

Phonics Song for Children | Alphabet Song by Patty Shukla

I love Patty Shukla’s videos not only for the ASL factor, but she has an individual one for each letter of the alphabet to help with beginning sounds. Definitely on the top of my list. In this particular video, she goes through the letters signing them and giving examples of a word that begins with the letter, and then signs that word too.

See It, Say It, Sign It | Letter Sounds | ASL Alphabet by Jack Hartmann

Jack Hartmann is another one of my favorites. He has several different ASl alphabet videos so make sure to check out his channel here. In this particular video, you see the letter, say it, and use different words with the beginning sound and sign it.

Learn ASL w/ Josh & Blue | Sign Language for Kids by Blue’s Clues & You!

This is a great video that your class can sing and sign along with the alphabet after they have learned it. The video continues on to teach some additional words in sign language as well.

Are your little learners working on their beginning sounds? I have a fun Gobble Gobble A Beginning Sounds Game for you today to help them practice those letter sounds!

I’ve been playing this game with my own kids for many years and now get to play it with my nephews on Thanksgiving. We all sit around after eating our yummy Thanksgiving dinner, some people looking at the ads and getting their Black Friday shopping lists ready, some cleaning up and I get to play this fun game with the kiddos!

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

the setup

To play the game, all you need to do is download the printable at the bottom of the post. Cut out all of the squares and laminate so you can play the game over and over again. You will also need some kind of container to put the cards in. I used a basket I had in my decoration stash, but you can use anything you have on hand.

to play

This game can be played with one student or many. You will put all of the cards into the container and shake them up. Have a student pull out a card, look at the letter, and say the sound it makes. If playing alone, choose another card and repeat. If playing with other students move to the next person to take a turn.

There are also some cards that say, Gobble! Gobble! If a student chooses a Gobble Gobble! card, they gobble like a turkey and put all of their letters back in the container and it’s the next players’ turn or they can start over again if playing alone.

There are both uppercase and lowercase letters. You can choose to use them both or just one set, the game will work the same either way.

My little friends love playing this game so much and get so into saying gobble gobble like a turkey. They hope to pull those cards!

I’m always trying to think of new ways for little learners to practice their beginning sounds. Since Halloween is quickly approaching, I made this Boo Beginning Sounds Game for them to have a fun new way to practice their sounds.

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

I’ve been playing this game for years with my kids and it’s always a favorite, We’re just putting a Halloween spin on it today.

The Setup

To play the game, all you need to do is download the printable at the bottom of the post. Cut out all of the squares and laminate so you can play the game over and over again. You will also need some kind of container to put the cards in. I used a Halloween themed fortune cookie box I had in my stash from years ago. I believe it’s from Michaels but you can use anything you have on hand.

I love helping to teach little learners their letters and the sounds they make. It’s the first building block to helping them learn how to read and is so important. I’ve gathered some of my favorite Activities To Teach Beginning Sounds.

I love making things fun, hands-on and like to play a lot of games. When your students get to play games, it makes learning not such a daunting experience for them.

Alphabet Hats

These alphabet letter hats are a fun way to help introduce the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. There are 4 pictures of things that begin with the letter sound and then they get to practice writing the uppercase and lowercase of the letter on the back strip.

Alphabet-Beginning Sounds Dough Mats

These dough mats are such a fun hands-on way for your little learners to practice their letters. They will get to have fun making each letter out of dough and the pictures on each mat help reinforce the beginning sound that the letter makes. They will then again get to practice writing the uppercase and lowercase versions of the letter.

My Alphabet Book

This is a fun book to use each time you teach another letter in the alphabet. Each letter of the alphabet has its own page in the book that shows the letter and pictures of things that have that letter beginning sound. They will also get to practice writing the uppercase and lowercase of the letter as well.

Now that we’ve introduced the letters of the alphabet we can start reinforcing the beginning sounds the letters make and help your little learners identify pictures that match the sounds. There are several games that I like to play that will help with this.

Beginning Sounds Board Games

These beginning sounds board games are a fun and engaging way to practice beginning /initial sounds. They are a fun hands-on addition to your literacy center rotation, can be used in small groups, or can be sent home to play with family members.The games can be played with 1-4 players and you can play using a die or using the spinners that are included.

Beginning Sounds Mystery Picture Puzzles

These puzzles are a fun hands-on addition to your literacy center rotation, can be used in small groups, or can be sent home to practice with family members.The students will match the puzzle piece letters to the matching beginning sound to solve the mystery picture.

Beginning Sounds I Have Who Has Games

These I Have Who Has Games are great to play as a whole class or can even be played with as little as two players. Choose a student to start and they will ask the class who has a word that has the beginning sound of the letter on their card. For example, Who has a word that has a beginning sound of the letter A.  Everyone will look at their cards at the picture to see if it starts with an A sound. The student that has the picture of an apple will raise their hand and tells the class I have apple. They will then continue to go to the bottom of their card and ask, who has a word that has the beginning sound of the letter B.? Continue the game until all letters and pictures have been matched.

Beginning Sounds Puzzles

I share a free printable set of beginning sound puzzles here. It’s a fun hands-on way for the kids to be able to choose a picture and match it to the letter sound that it begins with. If they haven’t learned all of their letters/sounds yet, only give them the letters you’ve reviewed and continue to add more as they learn.

Color By Code Beginning Sounds

These color-by-code beginning sounds pages are always fun for your little learners. The students will look at the picture in each section and color it one of 2 colors depending on if it begins with the letter sound at the top of the page. They will continue until all of the sections are colored to reveal the letter.

Beginning Sounds Spin and Cover

This beginning sound spin and cover game is a great one to use as a center or in small groups. The students will use a paper clip and pencil and spin a letter. They will then cover a picture that has the same beginning sound as the letter.

Beginning Sounds Letter Bingo

And last but definitely not least, beginning sounds letter bingo. This is a great one to use with the whole class or in small groups. The teacher will call/show the picture and the students will have to find the correct beginning sound letter on their game board.

When teaching the alphabet, we’re not just teaching the letters but the beginning sounds they make as well. These Free Printable Beginning Sound Puzzles are a fun way for your little learners to practice their letter sounds.

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

The Prep

The download contains 26 different puzzles for your students to put together for each letter of the alphabet. Simply download the puzzles at the bottom of the post. Print and laminate them. Laminating is suggested so they hold up to being played over and over again. Then cut out each of the puzzles on the lines and you’re ready to go!

To Play

These Free Printable Beginning Sound Puzzles work great as a center or in a small group setting. Simply mix together all of the puzzle pieces. Have a student choose a puzzle piece with an object on it.

Have them say what the object is out loud, and then search through the puzzle pieces to find the matching letter-beginning sound. The letter X puzzle is a picture of a fox use the /x/ as the ending sound.

You can start with just a few letters to begin with and continue adding until your students have learned all of their sounds. And to continue to make it a little more challenging, after they have done all of the puzzles, have them put them into alphabetical order.

We like to store our puzzles in photo boxes from Michaels, sandwich baggies, or plastic snack containers that we find at Dollar Tree to keep them nice and organized.

Back to school time means learning the alphabet, letters, and beginning sounds. So I thought we’d read a book about the alphabet this week for our Literacy Snack Healthy Alphabet. We will be reading, Eating the Alphabet Fruits and Vegetables from A to Z by Lois Ehlert.

This book introduces the letters of the alphabet and fruits and vegetables from around the world that begin with each letter. This is a fantastic book to also talk to the students about making healthy eating choices and trying new fruits and vegetables.

For our snack today, the kids will be sampling all the different types of fruits and vegetables that they have seen in the book.

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

Ingredients

The snack part is totally up to you. You can choose to have as many or as few choices of fruits and vegetables to try. I left some whole so they could be passed around, felt, and smelt. A great way to tie into a lesson on the five senses as well. And then some of the fruits and vegetables we cut up and ready to be snacked on. Today I chose to use, grapes, blueberries, strawberries, carrots, onion, cucumber, banana, broccoli, lime, nectarine, and an orange.

This would be a great time to grab some fruits and vegetables that the kids have probably never seen. Jicama, dragonfruit, and leeks would all be fun options.

Free Printable

While the kiddos are enjoying their healthy fruits and vegetable snack, I made a free printable for them to work on. I made two different versions so choose which is best for your class. The first option is for the students to draw in a fruit or vegetable that begins with the letter in the box. The second version allows them to choose the letter they want and draw a fruit or vegetable that begins with that letter.

At the beginning of the school year a lot is focused on letters during ELA time and numbers during math time. From identifying letters, learning sounds, writing letters to counting objects, identifying numbers, and writing numbers. Being able to differentiate between letters and number is an important skill for our little learners.

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

To help with this concept, I have two favorite books to read. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom for letters and Chicka Chicka 1,2,3 for numbers. Both books are so catchy and will have your kids and is a great way to help introduce the concept.

Free Printable Letters and Numbers Sort

To help reinforce the concept of letter and number discrimination I made a free printable letters and numbers sort that can be used during either math, ELA, or both for the students to practice.

Simply download and print the printable. Add letters and number manipulatives and you’re ready to go. I used magnetic letters and numbers and also mini eraser letters and numbers found in the Target Dollar Spot section. Foam letters and numbers would work great as well.

Not only are the students getting to practice differentiating letters and numbers, but they are also getting to work on their fine motor skills as well.

This time of year is all about introducing the alphabet! For our Literacy Snack Alphabet Tree Read-Aloud this week, we are reading our favorite alphabet book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin, Jr.

“In this lively alphabet rhyme, all the letters of the alphabet race each other up the coconut tree. Will there be enough room? Oh, no – Chicka Chicka Boom! Boom!”

It’s an all-time favorite book for the students. To go along with the book this week, we’ll be making our own alphabet trees!

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WTIH

Snack Idea Ingredients

Each student will need

1 pretzel rod

5 green apple slices

3 Whoppers candies

Assemble

To make the alphabet tree, have the students use the pretzel rod for the tree trunk. Next, add the green apple slices to the top of the pretzel rod as the tree leaves. Last, they can add the Whoppers on as the coconuts. I searched high and low for some alphabet cereal or crackers to add to our trees but unfortunately came up empty-handed. Either way though, the kids just love making the same tree as in the book!

While the students are enjoying their alphabet tree snack, I made a free printable for them to work on. They will get to color the coconut tree and write all of the letters of the alphabet.

A couple of weeks ago I shared a fun sight word balloon toss game that we did to practice our sight words this summer. We had my nephew over the other day that is going into kindergarten this fall so we switched up the game and did this letters and sounds balloon toss.

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

My kids learned their letter sounds when they were 2 with the help of the Letter Factory.  My nephew has been obsessed with it too and we love to sing the song together to practice our letter sounds.

We’re taking our letters and sounds practice outside today and using water balloons. I drew a bunch of letters on the ground with chalk and made a circle around each one to make it more like a target. You can have the kids write the letters too for practice.

Next, you’ll want to fill up the water balloons. Have the kids choose a letter, say the name and the sound that it makes, and then toss the water balloon at it.

Have them keep going until they’ve identified each letter and sound. Move to another area and play the game all over again! Water balloons make practicing letters and sounds so much fun!

I hope you kids have as much as mine did with this letters and sounds balloon toss!
