We’re nearing the end of the school year and I love doing camping theme activities during this time. So for this week’s Literacy Snack Camping Read Aloud, we’re going with a camping theme and reading, A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee, by Chris Van Dusen.

“Mr. Magee and his trusty dog, Dee, are enjoying a peaceful camping trip when all of a sudden they find themselves plunging down a mountain and teetering on the edge of a huge waterfall! How will they find their way out of this slippery situation?”

It’s a fun book with a lot of adventure that keeps the students engaged. For our snack this week to go with the book, we are making a campfire like the one Mr. Magee and Dee roast their marshmallows over.

Ingredients

Each student will need

1 slice of bread

6 pretzel sticks

4 candy corn

a small handful of chocolate chips

2 mini marshmallows

-you’ll need a circle cookie cutter to share as well

Assemble

First, have the students take turns using the circle cookie cutter to make a circle out of the slice of bread. Next, the students can have re range of creating their own vampires. I used the chocolate chips around the outside of the bread as “rocks”. The pretzels are the logs in the fire, and the candy corn can be the flames. Have the students save two of their pretzels sticks and put a marshmallow on the end of each stick so they can roast marshmallows over the fire like Mr. Magee and Dee!

Camping Bingo

My kids are obsessed with bingo so we play our camping bingo every chance we get!

S'more craft

Making a s’more craft and writing about them is always a favorite.

How to make a s'more

Cooking class how to make a s’more is a super fun way to get in some sequencing and writing practice. Making their own paper s’mores make it even more fun!

Camping activities

And you can’t go wrong with the camping activities pack that covers all kinds of fun things from word search, to math practice, writing, and vocabulary.

And I have gathered all of my favorite camping read-alouds here if you’re looking to add some more.

I hope you kids have fun making their campfires!

See you next time!
