We’re breaking into our fall books today for a Literacy Snack Idea Acorn Read-Aloud this week. We’re are reading, Because of an Acorn, by Lola M. Schaefer and Adam Schaefer.

Because of an acorn, a tree grows, a bird nests, a seed becomes a flower. This is a perfect book to illustrate the vital connections between the layers of the ecosystem. The book makes it easy for little learners to understand the cycle and how everything works together.

There is even a great area in the back of the book which goes more into detail about white oak trees, acorns, the ecosystem, and more. It even gives ideas of how children can help the forests.

For our snack this week, it’s only appropriate, that we are making acorns!

3 chocolate chips

3 mini Nilla wafers

a tiny bit of peanut butter to use as glue or try cream cheese if you have nut allergies

Assemble

To make the acorns, have the students put the tiniest amount of peanut butter onto the chocolate chip. Place the chocolate chip onto the Nilla wafer in the center. Next, have them again put the tiniest amount of peanut butter onto an unwrapped Hershey Kiss. Press the Hershey Kiss onto the underside of the Nilla wafer. easy peasy, you have your acorn!
