Literacy Snack Idea Counting

October 11, 2017

this article (and most) on primary playground, does contain affiliate links that we do earn a commission off of.  clicking these links does not cost you any extra but helps our website to keep great articles and freebies like this coming your way.

We’re getting into the Halloween spirit with this weeks Literacy Snack Idea. We are reading 10 Busy Brooms, by Carole Gerber. It ties in perfect to reinforce learning our numbers.

This is a cute counting book with cute little witches rescuing each other from the clutches of skeletons, goblins, ghosts, werewolves and the like. Each added broom rider is saved with an accompanying rhyme. When the extra long broom becomes overloaded, they meet the tenth witch who is quite different, but just as friendly.

For snack this week, I thought it was only appropriate to make brooms to go along with the story.

ingredients

each student needs

2 pretzel sticks

1 cheese stick

Literacy Snack Idea 10 busy brooms

assemble

Each student will need to cut or break their cheese stick in half. They’ll carefully start to peel back the layers of the cheese stick just over half way up the stick. When it’s all pulled apart, push the pretzel stick into the other end of the cheese stick as the handle of the broom. Super simple but the look so cute!
