March 28, 2018

This week’s literacy snack read-aloud is perfect to go along with your flower or plant unit. We’re reading a great book by Eric Carle, The Tiny Seed.

“In autumn, a strong wind blows flower seeds high in the air and carries them far across the land. One by one, many of the seeds are lost — burned by the sun, fallen into the ocean, eaten by a bird. But some survive the long winter and, come spring, sprout into plants, facing new dangers — trampled by playing children, picked as a gift for a friend. Soon only the tiniest seed remains, growing into a giant flower and, when autumn returns, sending its own seeds into the wind to start the process over again.” -Goodreads

It’s a great book to help the students follow the life cycle of a flower on an easy-to-understand level. For our Literacy Snack Idea Flowers Read-Aloud snack this week, of course, we have to make a beautiful flower that the tiny seeds grow into.

Ingredients

Each student will need

1 cutie orange

A small amount of sunflower seeds

1 small celery piece cut in half

2 spinach or salad leaves from a bag

Flower snack ingredients

Assemble

To assemble the flowers, first, have the students peel their cutie oranges and separate the orange segments. Place the orange segments around the little pile of sunflower seeds. Use the celery as the stem and place the leaves next to the stem. So pretty and perfect for spring!

Free Printable

As the students are enjoying their flower snack, I made a free printable for them to work on. They will get to color and number the boxes in the order they happened in the story. It’s also a great review of the life cycle of a flower that we’ve been working on.
