Ahoy Matey! This week we’re celebrating talk like a pirate day so we’re incorporating that into our Literacy Snack this week! We are reading, Pirate’s Perfect Pet, by Matt Myers.
“Big, brave Captain Crave can check off most items on the handy Be Your Best Buccaneer checklist. He has a pirate ship, an eye patch, courage and daring, and more. Only one thing is missing: Captain Crave doesn’t have a pet. Arrr! Shuck me an oyster and set sail for land! The captain and his crew race and chase critters of every size and shape, from the beach to a farm to the zoo to a pet shop, causing a commotion wherever they go. But just when all seems lost, the search party stumbles on the most perfectly perfect pet for Captain Crave. Has he finally met his match? Aye-aye!”
This is such a fun read-aloud for the kids! At the end, the pirate finally decides that his perfect pet is a parrot so that’s what we are making for our snack this week!
each student will need
2 pieces of wheat bread
2 thin slices of orange cut in half
a small triangle of sliced cheese
2 pretzel sticks
circle cookie cutter to share
Have the students use the circle cookie cutter to make 2 circles from their bread. Place them on the napkin on top of each other like a snowman. Add the eyes and the cheese as it’s beak. Use the orange slices as its wings and add the pretzels below for him to stand on.
He turns out so cute!
While the kids are enjoying their parrot snack, I created a free printable for them to work on as well. In the book, the pirate is looking for his perfect pet. On the printable, the students will be able to draw in what they think the perfect pet would be for a pirate.
