We’re sticking with our Halloween theme again for this week’s Literacy Snack Idea Mummy, we’re reading, There Was An Old Mummy Who Swallowed A Spider by Jennifer Ward. The kids absolutely LOVE this book! The illustrations in the book are some of my all-time favorites.
“As the old mummy makes his way across a graveyard and through a haunted castle, he swallows all kinds of creepy things. From a rat to a witches’ brew, and a crow to a spooky ghost, this mummy keeps swallowing and swallowing…until finally there’s a knock on the door. Trick or treat!”
For our snack this week, I thought making spiders would be absolutely perfect! We are also working on a spider unit so it ties in just perfectly for us.
These resources from Primary Playground work well with this article.
Snack Idea
ingredients
each student will need
one chocolate mini donut
5 or 6 pretzels
assemble
To make the spider, the students will need to break apart the pretzels into 8 leg pieces. Carefully push each pretzel into the donut 4 to each side for the legs. Add the eyes on last. Super simple but he’s oh so cute!
Free Printable
While the kids are enjoying their snacks, I made a free printable they can work on. They’ll get to color all of the things the old mummy swallowed.
