Literacy Snack Idea Zoo + Free Printable

August 30, 2017

Literacy Snack Idea Zoo + Free Printable

for your shopping convenience, there are amazon affiliate links provided in this blog post.

This weeks literacy snack idea is a new book that I found and fell in love with. We’re reading Zoo Day by Anne Rockwell.

A young boy and his family visit the zoo for the very first time. From gorillas to lions, polar bears to parrots the family celebrate a day he will never forget. With simple, lyrical text and bright illustrations that jump off the page, Zoo Day brings the joys of visiting the zoo vividly to life.

This would be a perfect snack to save and use this year if you have a field trip to the zoo planned. We do not so we’re running with it now, but how fun would it be to tie it in with the field trip?!

In the book, the family sees many different animals so I have chosen to make monkeys for our snack this week.

Items you’ll need per student

I piece of wheat bread

1 Milano cookie

2 slices of banana

1 pretzel

2 candy eyes

Circle cookie cutter to share as a class

To assemble

Have the students take turns using the cookie cutter and make circle out of their piece of bread. Place the 2 slices of banana on the sides of the circle to make the ears. Place the cookie sideways at the bottom part of the circle piece of bread. Have the student break the pretzel into a smile they like and add it on top of the cookie. Place the candy eyes on.

While the kids are assembling their snacks, I created a printable that they can work on. They will draw a picture of their favorite animal that they’ve seen at the zoo, saw in the book, or would like to see at the zoo. So many fun options for them to draw.

I bet you have some beary good readers in your class! These would be great to give out as a celebration for reaching a certain ready level during a teddy bear reading picnic in the classroom or even at the end of the school year along with a book as an easy end of the year gift.primaryplayground.net/beary-good-reader-treat-bag-topper/ ...
