Literacy Snack Johnny Appleseed

This week I have a fun literacy snack and free printable to go along with the book,  Johnny Appleseed.  Combining a great book, a free printable activity, and a simple apple-themed snack gives children a chance to read, learn, and enjoy a hands-on activity all in one lesson. Whether you’re teaching about Johnny Appleseed in the fall or exploring apples, this is an easy way to make the story come alive for young learners.

This sweet, illustrated book tells the story of Johnny Appleseed and how his love for nature began when he was a young boy. It tells how he traveled around planting apple trees and sharing his love of the outdoors with others. It’s a fun story that also shows how little acts of kindness and generosity can make a big difference. It’s a great book to read with your class when learning all about Johnny Appleseed!

Literacy Snack Johnny Appleseed

For our snack today, we will be having apples! You have some options with this one. You can choose to do pre-cut apple slices or give each student a whole apple. As part of the lesson, cut an apple in half, go over what you find inside, and show the students the seeds that Johnny would have planted to grow a tree.

I also made a free printable to go along with the book while the kids are enjoying their apple snacks. The printable has a few different fun activities to go along with the book. The students will get to draw and write about a way that they have helped others. There is a picture they can color, and there are also two comprehension questions to go along with the book for them to answer.
