It’s back to school time and I’m excited to start sharing my weekly literacy snacks with you again! This weeks literacy snack idea is a book all about having courage to be who you are. We are reading, Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, by Maria Dismondy.
“How can Ralph be so mean? Lucy is one of a kind and Ralph loves to point that out. Lucy’s defining moment comes when Ralph truly needs help. Because she knows what she stands for, Lucy has the courage to make a good choice. This charming story empowers children to always do the right thing and be proud of themselves, even when they are faced with sticky situation.”
In the book, Lucy is a little “different” and one of those things that makes her different is her favorite sandwich. It’s spaghetti in a hot dog bun which is what we’ll be making for our literacy snack this week!
Ingredients
hot dog buns – one per student
a pot of spaghetti prepared at home – just sauce and noodles
Assemble
This is a quick and easy snack today. Each student will need a hot dog bun. Have them help hold it open as you give them a scoop of spaghetti inside of it and your snack is done! The kids love trying the same sandwich that Lucy loves in the book. It is actually surprisingly good!
While the students are enjoying their spaghetti in a hot dog bun, I made a free printable for them to work on. They will get to think about a good choice they can make and draw a picture about it. You can download the free printable from my teacherspayteachers store at the bottom of the post.
This is a great book and activity to tie in with character traits and having good citizenship. As an extension to this book, my Character Traits – Having Good Citizenship pack is perfect to go along with this.

I hope your students love their special spaghetti in a hot dog bun snack and I can’t wait to keep sharing more literacy snacks with you again all school year long!
We’ll see you next time!
This is great, but the link is not working.
