In this week’s Literacy Snack Farm Read Aloud, we’re reading, Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown. It’s a simple, rhythmic book about the cycle of a day on a farm, where a family of animals peacefully plays and sleeps. It pairs as a perfect read as an addition to your farm animal unit or a field trip to a farm.

For our snack this week, we’re making a cow and I just love it!
Ingredients
Each student will need
1 piece of white bread
2 Hersey kisses
2 chocolate chips
2 mini oreos
strawberry cream cheese
cookie cutter for everyone to share
Assemble
To make the cow, each student will need to use the cookie cutter to make a circle. Save the bread scraps. Use a small amount of the strawberry cream cheese, and spread it along the bottom portion of the cut-out bread as the cow’s nose. Place the 2 chocolate chips in the nose as his nostrils. Place the mini Oreos on the cow and add the eyeballs on top of those. Use the Hersey kisses as his horns. Using some of the bread scraps, tear off 2 corners and add them as his ears.
Free Printable
While the kids are eating their snacks, I made a free printable for them to work on. They will draw their favorite animals that are found on the farm.
