Welcome back for this week’s Literacy Snack Caterpillar Read Aloud idea. This week’s idea is sure to be a hit with the kiddos! We are reading an all-time favorite, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

“One sunny Sunday, the caterpillar was hatched out of a tiny egg. He was very hungry. On Monday, he ate through one apple; on Tuesday, he ate through three plums–and still he was hungry. Strikingly bold, colorful pictures and simple text in large, clear type tell the story of a hungry little caterpillar’s progress through an amazing variety and quantity of foods. Full at last, he made a cocoon around himself and went to sleep, to wake up a few weeks later wonderfully transformed into a butterfly!”

The kids will each be making their very own hungry caterpillar today!

THIS ACTIVITY WORKS WELL WITH

Each child will need:

1 cherry tomatoes

3 green grapes cut in half

1 pretzel stick

2 candy eyeballs

A tiny amount of cream cheese to use as glue for the eyeballs.

To Assemble

Using the tomato as the head and the green grapes as the body, have the children arrange their caterpillar to their liking. Have them break their pretzel stick in half, and carefully poke each of them into the head (tomato) as the antennae. Help each child by putting just a dot of cream cheese on the back of their eyeballs and they can place them on the head.

While the kids are having their snack. I came up with a printable to go along with the story. The kids will color all of the different things that the hungry caterpillar ate through in the book. I leave the book up in case they want to come back to refresh their memories. The kids really love this one a bunch.
